Electronic air cleaners, especially ion generators, are said to produce ozone, a harmful substance. Ozone is known to irritate the lungs and could be a major health concern, especially if the air cleaning system isn’t cleaned and maintained regularly. While it is true that ion generators and electronic air cleaning systems purify the circulating indoor air a great deal, the health effects of ozone can quite be detrimental.
 
Some types of air cleaners, even those that claim to be odor removing, cannot completely remove odors. Cigarette smoke odors for instance, cannot be removed on the surfaces although smoke particles in the air have been filtered and purified. This is because many air cleaning units do not contain gaseous substance removal systems. Many air cleaning devices are equipped with scent producing features to mask the odors, instead of removing them. Products like these should be considered too in purchasing an air cleaner.
 
A variety of factors must be considered in addition to ensuring an air cleaner’s ability to reduce indoor air pollutant when buying an air cleaning system for a home or business. Each factor is very important, and all should be taken into account as a whole.
